Revisiting old Bollywood hits and Remaking successful South Indian films in Hindi language, has emerged as the easiest route to Mega Openings & so called Blockbusters in Indian Cinema today. But quality has taken a serious beating because of this on going trend. You can call it Lack of Proper Content and Scripts, on the other hand many would defend by calling it just the Inspiration. But surprisingly Anurag Basu's latest release " BARFI " comes like a fresh air among all the routine and boaring work going on in Indian Cinema today. Its an International Quality Cinema, and on many occasions even much better than that.
Story is mostly based around the 1970s of Darjeeling & Calcutta, which revolves around life of a fun loving and cute character named 'Murphy' who has a Speech and Hearing Impairment by birth, (Named by his Mother, after a famous Radio brand "Murphy"). As time passes he get famous by the name Barfi. Suddenly a Kolkata girl 'Shruti' (Played by South Indian Actress lleana D'Cruz) comes in Barfi's life and he instantly fell in love with her. But there is a simple problem. She is already engaged. Under family pressure she marries her rich fiance. Heart broken 'Barfi' finds himself in more trouble as his father's sudden Kidney failure gives story a new twist and things get even more complicated for him. He needs money for his father's operation so he decides to Kidnap an Autistic Girl Jhilmil Chattergie ( Priyanka Chopra), who already has her own issues in Life. From here on movie takes you to a Fun and Emotional Ride & you will Cherish each and every moment of it. Crisp editing and intelligent use of flashbacks makes the movie engaging till the very end.
RANBIR KAPOOR is the key. He just deliveres the Best Performance of his Career, an Award Winning Performance indeed. Today when six pack abs & witty dialogues are considered as recipe for a hit in Bollywood, this lean mean gold heart and quite Barfi has left the audience Speechless. Its just amazing how Ranbir has done justice to this role, inspite of not having a single dialogue in the entire movie. No doubt this very role now takes Ranbir Kapoor to a different league in Indian Cinema. He is not just another Star kid now. PRIYANKA CHOPRA also did justice to her role and her chemistry with Ranbir Kapoor is good. On the other hand lleana D'Cruz has done a great job in her first Bollywood movie. She is already a big Star in South and its definitely a nice start to her Bollywood Career. Music is excellent and it compliments the plot very well. The best thing about this movie is that, each and every character has fitted in to there roles perfectly, like pieces of a puzzle, and here the entire credit goes to Anurag Basu's Direction ability, who was under lott of pressure after the failure of " Kites ". Yes, few may complain about the long dragged Second Half. Also many are accusing Anurag Basu of lifting some scenes from foreign movies like Notebook, Kikujiro & Charlie Chaplin. But those scenes are embedded beautifully within the plot of 'BARFI' and in my opinion, its nothing less than a tribute to those iconic scenes. In one word, Barfi is an absolute delight. One should not miss this Movie. Films like these are not made very often. A must watch. Its 5 Stars out of 5.
